castillo-de-niebla
Medieval town of Niebla
To speak about the history of this town is almost like commentating on the whole province of Huelva. Long before this was formed, in 1833, the kingdom of Ibn Mahfuz joined in the same "taifa" de Labia - Niebla - all that is today part of the province of huelva and even the Portuguese Algrave. Its geographical location gave rise to a time of splendour in the Roman Ilipla. The bridge over the River Tinto and numerous traces which have come to light during different archaeological digs give evidence ot this. Some samples are exhibited in the Museum of the old Our Lady of Angels' hospital, a building from the XYIc and converted today into the house of Culture.

The walls of Niebla owe their current style to the Almohad rule, although there is part where the walls is of different periods of history: Tartessus, Roman and Muslim can be appreciated. The reddish colour, so comon in these extensive walls, gave name to the town in Muslim times, known in the writings of Arab geographers as "la roja" (the red). It has a perimeter of 2 Km which adapts to the land and has up to forty turrets, all rectangular (except for three octagonal) and five main gates, Seville, Socorro, Buey (ox), Embarcadero (quay) and Agua (water), as well as several small ones.
