The hamlet of El Rocío is enclaved in a municipality 15 km away. This hamlet has shaped itself throughout history around a hermitage, which at the end of the XIIIc was built, probably by Alfonso X the Wise, and consecrated to a Virgin: Our Lady of Rocío, whose devotion today is extended not only thourghout all the Andalusia, but many other places in Spain and even abroad. On a variable date, but always coinciding with Pentecost, a feast in honour of this Virgin known as the "Romería del Rocío" is held. More than a million people and almost a hundred brotherhoods arrive and go on pilgrimage on foot, in oxen drawn carts or on horseback, through old and dusty trails as far as the Almonteño Hamlet.
