Among the tourist places in the south of Portugal the most frequently visited:
- Lagos, founded by the Phoenicians, and Albufeira, one of the principal tourist centres.
- Salema is somewhat quieter and a must for the visitor is the cape of Sagres where the naval school Enrique el Navegante, the Portuguese king who promoted the great discoveries of his country, is situated. More to the west the cape of San Vicente which indicates the most western part of the Old Continent.
Fish and Seafood make up the most typical gastronomy of the Algrave. The most important are the large barnacles, prawns, lobsters and crabs. But the most traditional dishes correspond to slated cod cooked in a large number of ways and baked sardines which are normally served, above all, at parties.
